Photojournalists Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros killed in Libya

Academy Award nominated Restrepo director Tim Hetherington (pictured above right with co-director Sebastian Junger) and Pulitzer Prize winning war photographer Chris Hondros (not pictured) are reported as having being killed in the Libyan city of Misrata earlier today.

Hetherington sent out the following message via his twitter feed before anything was known of the incident.

In besieged Libyan city of Misrata. Indiscriminate shelling by Qaddafi forces. No sign of NATO

Three others are reported as being wounded in the attack.

Fuck.  Hetherington’s death and Hondros’s injury are huge losses for the photojournalism community and profession.  There are currently some conflicting reports regarding Chris Hondros.  The latest report is that he suffered grave head injuries, but is still alive.
